Badges of the 202nd Battalion C.E.F. from Febuary 1916

Who made the 202nd badges

For many years whilst researching the 202nd Battalion, I have come across many variant badges all reputable to be "original" WW1 202nd badges !!. Some with a manufacturing mark on the back but most without( please see photos below ) With this in mind I had always wondered as to which company had been tasked with the manufacturing of these badges.
My gut feeling was always, that it was more than likely to be Jackson Brothers of Central Alberta Canada. One good reason, for my view on this, was the proximity of this manufacturing Company being so close to where the 202nd were raised in the first place. In recent months I have discovered, in the Canadian archives, some prototype drawings of the 202nd badges by the Jackson Bros company, one of these designs which was just not used. I can only surmise that this indeed was the true manufacturer of the 202nd badges for the battalion in 1916.

The other possable manufacturers Tiptaft and Stanley Aylward just dont stack up. (see below)

This Babin, Meek, Stewart, Cox reference to the 202nd Sportsman's Battalion is detailed here.

This suggests that the manufacturers were Jackson Brothers, Tiptaft of Birmingham and Stanley & Aylward. I personally can't see that J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd of Birmingham England would be commissioned to produce the battalion's badges and I consider Stanley & Aylward to be more of a silver smith, so may have only produced some of the Officers badges of which I have one badge image on this site.

This further convinces me that the initial run of badges was produced by Jackson Brothers. If anyone has any other ideas then please let me know.

Restrikes, Fakes, Forgeries, and Copies

Over the many years that I have been researching the 202nd Battalion and collecting the badges of this unit, as well as collecting general military badges for the last 50 years, I have been amazed at the variant in styles and finishes that I have come access. I have tried to show some of the obvious fakes and restrikes so that buyers are not fooled in to paying big money for badges that may be only a few years old.

Just because it says "Jackson Bros." Doesn't mean it's a true and correct badge. Please be aware when you are buying. !!
